Hi I have a mac that for the past few months has been crashing and is getting worse. I can be typing away when the screen suddenly goes grey/black so the brightness disappears and I can barely see the screen. I cannot restart it or turn off the power by any means the only way is to reove the battery. ANy ideas..the power is set to normal. thanks

oh very helpful...it is a mac...so I cannot..
Need to know what kind of mac it is. Memory. Can you see anything on the screen eg a message of some sort
Absinth's message is quite funny really.

mollymoo: I assume it's an iBook? what sort? G4?

If it's still under warrantly, then see if you can get it replaced. And if you can remember when it first started going wrong, can you remember if you were installing anything, or fitted any memory, or anything like that?

yep it is a ibook g4....no..no message or error comes up...it justs goes black...someone said ti might be the reed switch...but would it do this whilst I am still using it...or the logic board was another suggestion...yeah the windows comment was funny, but it is driving me mad...lol..thanks guys for the help so far though...
is there anything that you're generally doing that causes it to go black? are all the lights on when the screen goes, or does everything turn off? is there a rough time that it goes off after, or is it random?

try switching it on, and just leaving it. don't touch it. see if it just turns itself off after 10minutes or something.
