Why have all my firefox bookmarks and google toolbar just dissapeared for no reason?

I opened a large number of tabbed windows and firefox said it had to close due to an error - now when i reopen it all of my personalising has gone - why is this? what can i do to get if back?

Re-installing Windows XP

Is it possible to set up hotmail, gmail or the windows beta version of hotmail to let you know when you have a new message if you are in another window?

If you are certain that things were working fine before the closure message - it may be a good idea to do a system restore to the day before the problem occurred.
