Can anyone offer some advice please? My PC has developed a problem recently. Internet Explorer takes ages to load up, and I am having severe problems with links when it 'lock ups' & displays the 'pointy hand' for a bit and then either stops completely or ignores the command. This appears to happen when trying to open a new window. Any help will be gratefully appreciated as I am running out of ideas. I re-installed IE from the MS web site and this made no difference. I am running W98 and IE6, and I did do some housekeeping recently, but I didn't think I deleted anything important.

Do any other programs 'lock up' or run slow? Possible things that might help are 'Disk Cleanup', 'Scandisk' and adjusting your 'Virtual Memory'. Have you cleared all your temporary internet files? Is it happening with all new windows that you open or only specific sites?

Mtephysical. Thanks for responding. Only IE seems to be affected but one or two minor "funnies" with Outlook Express. These may be just "knock ons" from the lockups I guess. Have now done Disk Cleanup (thanks) and cleared all temp internet files. It seems to happen on many sites, but not all the time. I had trouble posting the original question because of it, but managed at 3rd attempt. That said, it looks better now, no problems yet since cleanup. I'll let you know. Thanks again.
I too run w98 and IE6. I used to run IE5.5 and had no problems whatsoever. Since upgrading to IE6 I experience the same symptoms every now and then. When using IE6, I'll click a link and my PC will just lock up - I have to end task to continue. I'm figuring that this is a bug in IE6 because my PC is in tip - top condition in all other respects.

Thanks rinkytink, that's certainly possible. However I should point out that it happens a lot, and it often either ignores the command or eventually actually performs it. Other times, as you find, I have to end task. It is still happening, even after disk cleanup and check. Any other contributions gratefully received.
Hmmm! After checking around I have heard many different possibilities. Try this link: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/

One thing you could try. Click Tools - Programs - Accessories - System Tools and scroll down to and click System Information. On the Tools menu click "Internet Explorer Repair Tool". Once the program has run its course you'll have to reboot and see if this repairs the problem.
Sorry. That should've read "Click Start", not Tools, sorry.
