How can I check what broadband speed I am on apart from getting in touch with the service providers. I want to check using my computer to see whether I am on 1 MB or 2MB.

click (start) bottom left

at top of panel click (connect to)

then click on your active connection

on the general tab it should show your current connection speed

try running this:
http://adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

it is usually pretty accurate, but sometimes i've found it to be not be. there are several of these about, i find this to be about the best.

if you can't tell what the numbers it tells you mean, paste them here, and we can tell you what they mean.

halfadaily, your instructions do not work for me.

I am on Telewest cable broadband and know a lot about computers but still cannot get my connection speed from your instructions.

1) I am on "Classic menu" so do not get a "Connect to"

2) Even if I change to "Start menu" (Right click on Start then properties) I still do not get a "Connect to"

3) To display "Connect to" I have to right click on Start, then choose Properties, then choose Customize, then choose Advanced, and under Network Connections select " Display as Connect to" menu.

4) After all that, when I right click on my active connection I STILL do not get my Broadband speed.

Does it work for anyone else ?

Head for control panel and "Network & Dial Up Connections". Fire up the dialogue for your current connection and it should give you the speed as one of the items (3rd from top on mine!).

You might have the little tv screens active on the tray next to the clock on the bottom right of your display. Give that a click to go straight to the connection dialogue.

hippy: that is the speed of the connection itself, not the line.

mine (connected with an RJ-45) reads 100Mbps. this is of course not the speed of the line! (i wish it was...)

how about start downloading a demo or programme e.t.c and see what speed it downloads at.

1 mb would be about 100kbs and 2mb would download at 200kbs
