is there a shareware version of a musci studio that will allow me to lay down bass track then pecussion etc...is there one around?

There's a program called Audacity, which is freeware, which for free is about the best you're going to get. If you can get it, Logic or ProTools are the programs used by the professionals.

The weak point in the chain is usually you computer's mic & line inputs, so if you start to get serious, I'd recommend buying a proper sound recording card before paying lots for software.
