Graham Norton says that as a seven year old, in an effort to get off school, he told his mum he had a terrible pain in his stomach.  Mum promptly dragged him to the doctor's surgery - from whence he was packed off to hospital to have his appendix removed.

Have you ever told a lie that's backfired?

I haven't really, but it doesn't sound like a bad result for GN. He would have got more time off school than he hoped for and also eliminated the risk of future appendicitis. Win win.

He didn't see it like that, tomus.  :o)

Not that I can think of but then I don't tell lies as such, maybe the odd 'white' lie rather than hurt someone's feelings.
