Sounds as if the small round battery on the motherboard is at the end of its life. How old is the laptop?

its an IBM thinkpad T30 and it is a few years old. is it easy to remove the battery and to replace it? thanks for your reply

It sounds like it is your CMOS battery thats the problem. They don't last forever and the classic sign that its on the way out is that your PC doesn't remember the date or time of the clock looses/gains time. Have a look at http://www.chaletdirect.co.uk/Database_files/IBM_CMOS_batteries.htm

Yours is the CR2032-TPX I think but check your user manual because finding where it is can sometimes be difficult
