A whole load of my emails, both 'received' and 'sent' have suddenly gone missing. It must be literally hundreds. Can anyone throw any light on why - or where they might be please?

I'm using Windows Live Mail.

Can you access your email account using webmail, i.e. using a browser? If so, are the missing emails still there?

I've tried that. We use BT email and they're missing from the BT email platform too.
Open Windows Live Mail
Click the folder where the e-mails have disappeared (i.e., Inbox)
Click View
Click Current View or Show or Hide
Click Show all Messages
Also have you tried looking in the 'Archived' folder?
If they are missing on both your PC and the e-mail service then that implies you aren't actually downloading them to your PC.

In any case, check with your e-mail supplier whether they've archived a load because it was at the storage limit.
I think it can be related to the Hidden files, you need to enable the Show Hidden Files option while using the web browser version. There may be several more steps needed, but you''ll have to Google it.
I use Windows Live Mail Version 2009 with Windows 7 and all the messages I have received and sent are saved as .eml files in sub-folders located at
C:\Users\{my username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
The file names are hexadecimal strings, but hovering the mouse over each file shows me the 'From:', 'Subject:' and 'Date received:' details. Is it the same for you? Can you see any of your missing files in this area?

Thanks so much all. I won’t be able to try your suggestions immediately but I will get back to you -probably on Saturday.
