What is the difference between data and making a call. I tried to make a call but was told I had no credit yet appear to still have data. If i do not top up will it affect incoming calls and texts.

Your monthly allowance will be x amount of minutes for calls and y amount of data for internet. You have used all your minutes

Data uses the internet, phone calls and SMS use the telephone network. If you are not connected to WiFi then when you do any internet activity it connects to the Net via the mast.

And to be clear if I cannot make calls or texts then I cannot receive them
You usually can still receive them. Get someone to call/text you.
One tends not to pay for incoming calls.

There are apps that allow you to call over the Internet, not that I've used them.
