If I understand you properly, you have a tape player with SCART output and no SCART on your TV. I think what you are looking for is something like this:

That you can plug into the SCART ssocket on your player and the other cable into an HDMI socket on your TV.

I think you'll be hard-pressed to find a VHS player nowaday, Henry. I recently offered 2 of them to the British Heart Foundation shop and they didn't want them (can't sell them), so they went to the tip. You just MIGHT find one in a charity shop but there really is no call for them nowadays.

There are VHS players for sale on eBay. You could also check Facebook market place, Free cycle and Gumtree.

My sister and I have one each - she loves hers but VHS tapes are becoming more and more obsolete.

What I wanted was for someone to convert my DVDs to VHS tapes.

JJ, I've been thinking about this and it will be far cheaper to buy a bog standard dvd player than get your dvds converted.
