yeah, what is it - is it just a 35mm camera?

In cheaper cameras (digital or 35mm) you have a hole you look through to see what you are going to take (viewfinder), and a hole for the actual lens. They are separate.


This means that if you take a picture what you are seeing through the viewfinder is not exactly the same as what the lens is seeing, and so the picture will be slightly different.


In an SLR when you look through the viewfinder you are actually looking through the lens (using mirrors).


When you take the picture the mirror jumps out the way and the picture is taken.


This means that what you are looking at is exactly the same as the picture you take.


So if you think about SINGLE LENS REFLEX is a good name.
