Lost Sound on my Laptop - Can you help me?

I have recently developed the problem of no sound being available on my laptop. When I try to play music using winamp, I get the following error message:

DirectSound output v2.2.10 error
Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 8878000A

Does anybody know what has caused this. More importantly, can anybody suggest the best way to fix this problem? Thanks in anticipation. Ian

Try re-installing directX from the microsoft site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx
