Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - Two Notifications For Each Email. Help Please!

Whenever I receive an email the notification sound which I set up for my GMail sounds and I open it to look at it - then almost immediately, but sometimes a few minutes later, I get another sound for the same email!
This happens even if I have opened it to read it. It does not happen for my texts.
I know it does not really matter but have I set up something wrong?
