I know that it is possible to buy transmitters that plug into your phones audio jack, and also ones that use bluetooth, which then let's you play the audio on your phone via a radio.

But is there a way to do this directly from your phone without needing that extra piece of hardware, ie some sort of app?

No. Phones don't have hardware to transmit fm radio. You can't use software to magically create it somehow.

This is the thing I'm trying to bypass. It let's you transmit to any radio that you set to the same frequency as the transmitter. But doesn't seem to be possible without the hardware.
