Our Hall light fitting takes five B22 bayonet bulbs (upstanding rather than hanging down if that makes any difference). Some years ago we replaced the old 40W candescent bulbs with equivalent 9W Tesco energy efficient ones, I've now used the last spare that we had and find that matching replacements are not available. Could someone please recommend the best modern suitable replacement. Our preference is for cool white rather than warm white. Many thanks.

We replaced the bulbs in our light fitting with these:

You can buy them singly, rather than the 6-pack
You could try screwfix, if they are still available they will have them.
They never do last 10 years do they!

We found a good that Eveready do a wide selection of replacement bulbs, available online or in B&M stores.
You may like to consider LED bulb replacement.

"You may like to consider LED bulb replacement." Thanks Old Geezer, I'm beginning to think along those lines but it doesn't seem easy to establish the equivalent output or brightness. Any suggestions?
The important information for buying your replacements is the fitting type/size (thats the B22) and the light output (the 420 lm....that's lumens). So just look for similar LED lamps with between 400 and 450 lumens....and you can often choose warm or cool white, too.
There are charts on the Net. You are looking for equivalent lumens to 40W incandescent. https://www.thelightbulb.co.uk/resources/lumens_watts/
These are globe style rather than candle...

Many thanks to all contributors, I'll now be able to look through the available options with a lot more knowledge than I had before. Well done and thank you again.
Sorry, a bit late to answer this, but I just used to take my old bulb to an electrical shop and ask for the LED equivalent. Easy.
^easy? Yes, if you have an "electrical shop" that you can visit...many of us don't have such luxuries within easy reach.
