I receive about 100 emails daily from Mail Delivery Systems saying they were unable to deliver my mail. They all refer to emails that have not been sent by me. Can anyone give me an explanation for this?

It happens quite a lot. The E Mails are usually Spam and they use other peoples addresses to disguise where the Spam really came from. Just ignore it and don't worry about it within a week or two they will move onto someone elses E Mail address. If you want to read more about this then try looking at www.spamcop.net
Though WendyW's answer is possible it's not the most probable. Someone using your email address would also have to forge (spoof) your ISP details for the email to be returned to you - fairly hard to do and uneccessary as it is easy enough to get real addresses to spam from. I'm afraid the more likely reason (though not certain) is that your system is infected with a virus or even a trojan and someone is using your PC to send out spam from your PC. This is known as relaying.
