Police are trailing facial recognition cameras on Britain’s streets.with or without the public’s knowledge. One chap who pulled his jumper up over his mouth as he passed was fined £90.
Sounds like they need to rethink their plans, but they won't.

Technology good, police work bad.
That sounds terrible. Surely we have a right to pull our jumpers up over our mouths.

It might be a good idea for known trouble spots like football matches, as long as people are warned.
It's a bit like cctv in stores many don't show signs that you are being filmed.
I think it's a great thing

I think that is is a great idea in the lawless society of the UK in which we live, providing that it doesn't catch one, dating someone else's wife...;-)
[i] more than £200,000 was spent on six deployments that resulted in no arrests between August 2016 and July last year.[i]

excellent use of public money, then; it'd only be wasted on the NHS.
jno, they didn't use NHS money
I don't think people need to be warned about it. At football matches police actively look for banned supporters and those offenders wanted on warrant. Hopefully the technology will help them.
I know, hc4361, I was being a little ironic. That's a fair bit of money to spend for no results at all; might it have been more usefully given to the NHS?
That report is from 2016, I hope that facial recognition technology could save many man hours. The report doesn't say how much money would have been spent on the extra man power required to do the same job
the report covered August 2016 to July 2018, trials over two years.

They may of course have an unacknowledged intention of banning niqabs
^what a good idea.
Does it work with burkhas?

Trialing/Trailing?
Bob, can we just be clear, do you mean they are trialing the equipment?
Don’t see a problem, if you have nothing to hide it won’t bother you
However, as venator implied, a segment of the population always have their face covered so how does it work in that situation?...Obviously it doesn't and won't.
