Actress Tina Malone is facing contempt of court proceedings over a social media post allegedly showing images of James Bulger killer Jon Venables. Ms Malone revealed she had received a High Court summons in a series of Facebook posts on Thursday.

There is a global ban on publishing anything revealing the identities of Jon Venables and Robert Thompson. The Attorney General's Office (AGO) confirmed it had summonsed the actress to appear at the High Court.

Venables and Thompson were convicted of murdering two-year-old James in 1993. They have been living under new identities since they were released in 2001.

Should Venables’ (who has since been convicted and imprisoned for possessing indecent images of children) identity continue to be protected?

Not to protect his identity would surely be signing his death warrant. If that were the case, could the state be culpable of manslaughter? As for Tina Malone, if she has broken the law, she deserves punishment.
A moot point.

What you are essentially saying (not deliberately I hasten to add) is should he be exposed to the wrath of vigilantes. Putting it in that light, my answer would be no.
Oooop, I meant YES.

Canary, I haven't given my opinion.
Sorry, I'm getting very muddled this morning. I meant I think his identity should continue to be protected.

No, I know.
We don't want justice run by a hate mob, so yes his identity should continue to be protected.
I want to say yes it should for the reasons others have given, but at times I do question whether it shoud apply to Venables any more. He has shown no respect for the chance he has been given to live with a new identity. How many times should someone get a new identity and all that comes with that, on public funds, when they continue to be a blight on society.
Perhaps, Chelle, he should be warned in no uncertain terms that his present alias is his absolute last and that if he re-offends, his identity will not be protected. That way the blame will lie solely with Venables, himself should any harm befall him.
Yes his identity should continue to be protected
Who will be accountable if Venables kills the kid next door?
Yes ken, I'd agree with that
Thompson yes..but venables ? ..no..I 'd like a word or two in private with this heinous runt..throw away the key..he is a danger and will be all his life...
Talbot: Venables would be accountable. Every killer has a first offence. Children are at far greater risk from people their parents know and trust. Ask anybody working in child protection who has struggled to get a parent to accept advice.
But we already know that Venables didn't take his second chance.
I wasn't talking about second chances. I was suggesting that anybody who thinks knowing an offender lives in their street keeps children safe is fooling themselves.
Talbot "Who will be accountable if Venables kills the kid next door?" Are you suggesting that he should remain behind bars for the rest of his life? If so, i entirely agree. He has had more chances than he deserves. But whether or not his identity is protected will not determine whether or not he kills the kid next door. Unless, of course, his identity is not protected and the vigilantes mete out their own justice.
It does if the offender is driven out.

Venebles should be in prison for the rest of his life
Would you be happy with him living next door?

Are you saying the kids living next door to Venables are just as safe whether the parents are aware of it or not?
I'd have a little more sympathy towards his argument for anonymity if he kept his head down and did not continue to break the law. His lenient sentence and treatment since were based on him being very young when he committed the atrocity. That excuse has now passed and I believe that people are entitled to know what sort of creatures they have living amongst them.
