Hi i have a dell pc with a old style, roller ball mouse. The problem i am having is the screen jumps up and down without the mouse being touched and can not be controlled from the slide bar at the side of the screen. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried taking out the ball ? The rollers and small wheel which rotate against the ball get gummed up fairly easily and cause the symptoms you mention.

Just scrape off the dirt with a fingernail or a lint-free cloth and some cleaning solution.

If your mouse has started to play up, it really isn't worth spending too much time trying to fix it. Both Asda and Tesco will sell you a new mouse for under a fiver. (The last time I noticed a price, it was 2.97 - Tesco, I think, but it might have been Asda).

Chris

If its like mine, upturn the mouse under the label youll find two screws undo these and the top of the mouse will come off, inside youll be able to clean better plus youll find a rotating disc with a clear plastic LED one side and a infrared sensor the other manipulate these two so that they are upright and aligne themselves through the slots in the wheel as the might have become misaligned by dropping your mouse.
