I would like to transfer my pics and vids off my iphone 6 to my PC without using iTunes. I am still on an old iOs as I am nervous about updating and have seen friends lose loads of info that way. When I plug it in to the PC it only finds a small proportion of the photos and videos that are actually on my phone. Why is that?

Why don’t you want to use ITunes?

I back up using itunes, to the cloud and also to my PC, but I'm never sure how to actually find the photos and videos afterwards! I'm not convinced they are on there! I don't understand the 1000 saved pics on iPhone compared with the camera reel. I wanted to do it the old fashioned way like when you attach a camera and you can see the actual photos being uploaded!
I transferred all mine into File Explorer from an old Samsung GT S5, and a newish Samsung SM A5. The first issue is getting the phone settings right to allow the phone to share. This can be done via your router on some phones and via USB on all phones. Once your pc can "see" the phone settings in whatever file system you prefer to use. Your phone will probably have a system that allows you to choose which photos are to be shared. You will need to check all photos individually or, check all(as I did) to download them all. Another point is your phone is likely storing the photos in different gallerys depending on when and how you saved them. You need to identify the different lists, then choose all in that list.
Dropbox is a great storage app for photos that can be linked to your phone and, laptop.

You can find it in your App Store.

I did try Dropbox and somehow ended up with two of every file on my PC. I think I need to employ someone else to do all my tech stuff for me!
I no longer have a Windows machine to play with but doesn't the iPhone show up as a removable drive when you plug it into the PC anymore? One used to just be able to drag and drop the photos
Well surely if you’ve got them all safe in Dropbox, you can delete the duplications on your PC.

No, I deleted Dropbox after that. I'm still finding duplicates of everything..
