I have been tracing my family tree and just found out that my Great, Great, Great Grandad is listed on the 1881 census as an inmate of "Broadmoor" criminaly insane asylum at Sandhurst, Berks, but it doesn't give me any details of why he was there and wether he died there or not.

Any help where I can find the information appreciated. As none of my family still living know anything about it.

The staff at the Berkshire record office might know whether any records from Broadmoor have been made publicly accessible:

You might be interested in this letter which appeared in the journal of the Berkshire Family History Society. The editor's e-mail address is included and I am sure he/she would be happy to help. Incidentally the Public Record Office mentioned in the letter will be the national one at Kew, London where the staff are very helpful.
