The university colleges offer accommodation/b&b at reasonable rates

You need to explain what you mean by "best" and say what you want to spend...do you want luxurious, good value, close to centre, very modern or steeped in history etc...?

I am looking for a budget hotel in some good location.
Browns is worth considering. It's half a mile from the city centre (which is closer than most accommodation because the historic heart of the city simply doesn't have many hotels), generally well-reviewed on TripAdvisor and (by Oxford standards) quite cheap:

the randolph is right in the city centre and is an old building. Probably expensive though.
Just outside the city at Woodstock, the Kings Arms is good value, would also suggest the White Hart in Dorchester (some nice antique shops and glorious minster). And if you really want to blow it big time Le Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons out at Great Milton near Thame and less than 30 mins into the centre of the city. Raymond Blancs's Brasserie in Jordan is worth seeking out.
i would have thought that's a bit more than half a mile chris, but buses are so good it doesnt matter
Is the Randolph open - it had a bad fire.
Yes, the Randolph is open ....the fire was many moons ago, but doesn't match the word budget! And I wouldn't describe Woodstock as "just outside the city" either...and why would anyone mention le Manoir, when the OP clearly states "budget"?

^^^ The college-based accommodation is only available during student vacations though, isn't it? That would seem to exclude May.
I have just entered dates in may via the link and it is coming up with some options. Mind you, it might be a bit noisy during term time.

gingebee....best hotels, etc and before I saw a response to your 'definition; - nothing wrong in the hotels around as I bet the White Hart is cheaper than any Premier with the offers that they have on at the moment.....£49 with B&B and an eff load more 'character' than Premier can offer.

So two fingers comes to mind.
and the rest of what it means.
It’s a bit early for the Merlot isn’t it DTC?

Your reply to Gingebee was uncalled for.

Just why you think you know everything about everything shows you up for what you are.
Warning. As for the Randolph, Giles Coren, the Times restaurant critic, wrote about their breakfasts last year. He showed a photo of his breakfast. It was mean, miserable, burnt and expensive. You have to hope that that bad publicity has made the Randolph do something about the( probably ) precooked and warmed-up breakfasts.
Eccles....thanks for your reply and congratulations on understanding any of DTC's post. I'll avoid DTC in future.....
as you should avoid Eccles.....pernicious that she can be....the White Hart is a nice hotel and probably far cheaper than any Premier or Travel Lodge - and when I sighted this you had cited 'the best hotels'...
There are plenty of 'Best value' hotels on Tripadvisor or try Air BnB
next time, define your parameters better as to cost, location and perhaps expectations. That would help us all, even Eccles in her wonderfully secluded world - yes, there is no love lost.
