This was reasonably easy and works quite well but the spell checker which used to underline words in red no longer works and I can't find how to wake it up.

Look through your internet browser options and put a tick in the box for 'check my spelling as I type' Also, set your preferred Language as well.

Duh!
You've not told us which program you're referring to.

If it's Firefox (which you've mentioned in another post), go to Tools (or the hamburger), click on Add-ons and then on Dictionaries. You should have a British English dictionary shown there. [Mine is shown as 'British English Dictionary (Marco Pinto)]. Ensure that it's enabled or, if it's not there, use the search box to locate and install it.

Also go to Tools (or the hamburger) > Options.
If 'General' isn't already selected, click on it.
Scroll down to 'Language' and check that there's a tick next to 'Check your spelling as you type'.

If you're referring to something other than Firefox, please let us know which program it is,.

Not having much luck here. I have Firefox but after going to Options - Addons, Dictionaries isn't appearing. I've tried Grammarly and although it checks the spelling in this msg, it doesn't do so in BT internet messages.
Under Options, English/UK [en-gb] is enabled
When I go to Hamburger > Add-ons, I see this (after clicking on 'Dictionaries' down the left-hand side):

If you're not seeing 'Dictionaries' it suggests that you're using an old version of Firefox, as dictionaries used to be listed under 'Extensions'. (Look there to see if you've got a British English dictionary listed).

To check which version of Firefox you're using, go to Hamburger > Help > About Firefox. (You should have version 57.0.4)

To install a British English dictionary, go to Hamburger > Add-ons and type 'British English' in the search box. From the results which appear install 'British English Dictionary (Marco Pinto)'.

When I go to Hamburger > Options I see this (after checking that 'General' is selected and then scrolling down):

It's the box at the bottom of my illustration which needs to be ticked.
