We had a very similar experience. Our boiler stopped working on Christmas Eve two years ago but was fixed by british gas later that same afternoon.
They’re on double or triple pay so would not expect anything less, actually with the money we spend I’d expect them to come bronzed, oiled, honed and topless with a rose between their teeth twanging a small guitar with some romantic Latino music

Two satisfied customers then, Toorak. :-)

He was a nice looking young man, Jahulaye. I regarded him as a Christmas angel.
I can't say the same about the service we received when we woke on Christmas Day 2010 to find we had no water because the pipes outside were frozen - it took two weeks for it to be sorted out :-(
Question Author
Oh...

That is dire.
Well done British Gas.
Question Author
Yes, Marval. That's what we all said. :-)

Another nice outcome was that our neighbours across the road, having seen the BG van, came across and said we were welcome to go across to their house and joinn them for Christmas dinner, if need be. We were really touched by that.

Fortunately, we were going out anyway and I wasn't doing any cooking.
I'm guessing you have what used to be called the three star service Tilly? We have and its proved invaluable over the years
Question Author
We have Homeserve, Margot. Is that the same?
Yes that's the one Tilly - well worth the money, covers you for all sorts of things
What lovely neighbours Tilly.
Question Author
We have used Homeserve many times over the years, Margo. I wouldn't be without it.

We do have nice neighbours, Marval, fortunately.
Tilly......From my background in BT, its not just you that are delighted.....the BG Engineer should have been paid handsomely for his troubles !

I presume that the repair didn't take long, so he would have been back in the bosom of his family in time for lunch !
Question Author
I suppose the alternative to using BG Homeserve would have been ring round every boiler repair service in Bedfordshire asking if they could come out on Christmas Day.

Mikey, I hope he did get home for his Christmas dinner. Good luck to him. I didn't pay him. (directly)
Tilly.......I hope he went home with a nice slice of Xmas cake in his jacket pocket !
Question Author
No, he didn't, Mikey, but he did have a warm sausage roll whilst he was here.
One of your home made ones Tilly?
Question Author
Yes, Toorak. One of my special rustic sausage rolls.
