As long as the CPU (Main computer box) is switched on and your internet connection is active the download will complete without the monitor being switched on.
Sorry I missed something out, if your computer has any "energy saving" settings such as setting itself to sleep mode or hibernation or standby make sure these are turned off
Most people recommend that monitors ARE switched off for safety reasons - just like switching off your TV. It isn't likely to 'go up in smoke' again. Of course, this is probably completely untrue for the newer LCD monitors?

thanks guys. i take it with the monitor switched off it won't harm the graphics card which will be trying to produce an image?

now don't quote me on this, but the beauty of a TFT monitor is no screen burn. Leaving it on all night won't do any damage - and I'm sorry to hear of your problems before. But if you're really bothered, unplug it. Your pc will function as well without it..

...ans the graphics card will do what it wants anyways....

....nowt much

hi you can leave your monitor on but i would recomend taking the plug out of your monitor and it will leave your wife not scared that it might blow up this will do nothing to ure down load because its your processer that does all the work the screen isonly there to see what you what your processer is doing as long as your internet is on and your processer is on thats all and this matterabout the monitor blowing up will be resolved

p.s i think you can possibly put your computer on hibernate and it should stop the constant noise of the fan but i am sure that if some one replies and tells you that it is safe to put ure commputer on hibernate your down load should be fine. but the rest off my instructions is right

Most of the power usage on a PC is in the monitor (if its not a TFT one). Switching it off overnight saves electricity and gives peace of mind.
Basically the computer doesn't need a monitor to work, the monitor only exists so the user has something to work from.
