Toshiba Dvr20 Vhs Dvd Recorder Problem

I have a dvr20 which,when set to timer record on daily basis it changes from vhs to dvd of its own accord and then locks up and does nothing.If I switch it off.leave a while and switch on again I am able to reset the timer and it then repeats the change to dvd and locks up again.Has anyone any ideas as the better half is getting annoyed as she cannot record her soaps?

I looked at the manual and it does not seem to be covered by either the troubleshooting guide or the error message guide so it is possibly faulty.
