I own a Sony Xperia L phone, but when I come to update Chrome it tells me that I do not have enough memory.

This phone has a memory card on which I store my music and photos, but it seems that I am not allowed to store any Apps on it.

The phone from new, came with several apps already stored in the phones memory, and I have stored not many new ones 6 at the most.

The apps that were already stored cannot be deleted only disabled, can anyone please advise me what I can do?

Thanks for your answer ivor, but no, my pics and music are safely stored on the SD card, it is the phone's built in memory that is full.
it's a problem that lots of android mobes have going back years and still not rectified. i had the same glitch with my galaxy 6 i finished up rooting it then was able to move all the apps i wanted to move to my sd card, but rooting is ok for some people but not for others
