I still dont have a smartphone, and it seems i´ll be left behind in the not too distant future. So my question is, is 49 quid too cheap for a smart phone?

Not if it does the job.
I have a Nokia Lumia. You can get them for about £40 now.
it seems to have a fairly good spec inc 4g - and they didnt go overboard with fancy styling so maybe its a good bet. if you are an existing EE customer you can get it for £39 - http://ee.co.uk/our-company/newsroom/2015/07/07/EE-launches-the-UKs-lowest-priced-4G-smartphone-the-Rook

No it is because the Nokia is a Windows phone and they are far less popular than iPhones or Android phones.

Nokia are owned by Microsoft so they have to price Nokia / Windows phones cheaply to get people to buy them.
I got a lumia 820 and left it in the drawer for over a month, one day I decided to have a mess around with it.
Glad I did, Cortana understands every word I say I never have to type a text message anymore.(wish it worked with AB)

excuse my ignorance, but these phones off ebay dont come with a sim card, do they? so is a simple matter of buying one for a couple of quid?.
You can get sim cards free.
I`m pretty sure you`ll have to have the Rook unlocked if you want to use a sim card other than EE

was looking at the nokia 435, for 44 quid.
£40 isn't a knock off price .. it's normal for a basic brand new smart phone with 12 months warranty. You didn't state which Lumia you are talking about though.
https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/phones/microsoft/lumia-435/?cm_mmc=googleuk-_-PPC_PAYG_PLA-_-MicrosoftLumia435-_-MicrosoftLumia435+MicrosoftLumia435+Exact#colour=orange&memory=8gb&contractType=payasyougo&gclid=CNnImveUnscCFSb4wgodtEwP8g&gclsrc=aw.ds

You will then need to install a sim card which can be either ...PAYG sim only or Pay monthly sim only. Either one will usually be free from the network provider.
