Sound Bar For Tv?

Can anyone here enlighten me please.

Last year we bought a new Toshiba flat screen TV.....the short story is the sound is simply awful. I find it screechy especially when you get a crowd clapping...its doing my head in.

Its been adjusted dozens of times but no better. I have read many reviews that suggest its the same with a lot of flat screen TVs?

Some say a surround sound system will cure it or a Sound bar.

Were in an apartment so don't think surround sound is suitable nor do I want the expense.

Has anyone had this kind of problem and how did you solve it please.

There's not enough room in flat screen tvs for decent speakers so sound bars are always recommended and it won't cause any problems with the neighbours.

What sort of price bracket were thinking of? They range from reasonable to outrageous, with every price inbetween
I have a Phillip's soundbar, would definitely recommend...
I have a Yamaha YAS93 soundbar....A Which? Best Buy and second only to a SONOS model costing £500!.
Terrific sound quality and useful features including a button "clear voice" to make the spoken word stand out from background sounds/music....worth buying for that alone!
I had an LG soundbar, it was brilliant. This one, I'm pretty sure:

I bought it to use with an LG flat screen TV. The sound was already very good, but I wanted a clearer sound. I also live in a flat, I liketo reduce our noise where possible.
My flat screen TV has awful sound quality. I linked mine from the headphone socket on the TV to the hi-fi aux socket which has surround reproduction and now have great sound.
Have you considered a 'Sound Base'?. It's like a sound bar but you sit your TV on top of the Sound Base. The speakers are built in to the unit and seem to be better quality than the hit and miss sound bars.
The price is normally that bit dearer but worth it for that Home Cinema Sound without the trailing cables to each individual speaker.
They can be very loud and bassy, so you must consider your neighbours regarding the noise.
I can vouch for the 'Canton DM 50'. Brings your TV sound to life.
Always try a demo in store to see if it meets your expectations before buying.
