Thank you boxtops. Tried it three times, each time I got to the where to move bit and the screen goes black and throws me off site. When I go back the 915 messages are still there! I'm obviously doing something wrong, but if wrote down all the instructions and did follow it. Thanks anyway.
Would it let you delete them a few at a time?
Question Author
No, couldn't delete any.
sorry, I'm stabbng in the dark, I haven't got an iPad :-(
1.Go to your Sent folder
2.Tap on the "Edit"-Button on the top right
3.Select the first email in your list
4.Hold down the "Move" button
5.While you are still holding the "Move"-Button, deselect the first E-Mail
6.Put away all your fingers from the screen and wait a few seconds
7.Now Mail asks you where to move ALL of your emails
8.Select the Trash-Folder
9.Inside the Trash-Folder, you can delete all items at once
Step 6 may well take more than a few seconds for 900+ messages

I've done it! Realised I was selecting last message not the first one, how daft is that then?
Thanks for all advice and help.
You need to log into your email account via safari. Then you need to do all your clearing out there. So when you log into your account deleted all emails that are no longer needed from all folders. You will them also free up space on your iPad.
The app is just for ease. All the controls are done via the account in Safari.
You need to delete them from the server or they will just keep reapperaing.

Are you using the Apple Mail app or a web app.

If you are using the Apple app, go to icloud.com and log in with your Apple ID. Then go to mail and delete the old emails.

I followed boxtops suggestion and eventually it worked. Thank you for your suggestion though.
If they return, delete them through iCloud.
