When I try to back-up e-mail messages onto disk they always come out in coded form - a mass of symbols (mostly little squares) in which the message is embedded. How do I turn this code back into normal text?

which email client are you using? If you are using Outlook or Outlook Express, you should Export the emails to a file, and then back up that file to disk. This does work as I use this method often to backup my mailbox.

Best of luck...

Thanks Tritan.  I'll try that.

To back up Outlook emails, look for an outlook.pst file and other files within the same directory ( there may also be an archive.pst file ), their will be about 5 files in total. copy these to CD, heypresto its backed up.

If you re-install Windows just copy these files over the the new installation of Outlook and all you emails suddenly appear !
