good make, best picker uper, if you know what i mean,
also a good carpet sweeper, same principle, as i just killed the one i have by shaking, and it promptly fell apart.

Get a Ge Tech Ram. Rechargeable, in readily easy to use and carry. Look for the video ad. I think it's brilliant. And because it's cordless... no bending down and messing with plugs and cables. Go for it! And if you are my sort of age ...it's incomparable. Also look it up on John Lewis web site and read the reviews! You won't regret it. Also handle on stem position...

It is strange how some people hate Dyson. I have had 2 models over the last 20 years, neither died I just upgraded and gave the first one away. The second is about 8 years old now and is still working very well, it has to deal with animals, diy and basically anything else I decide should be able to vacuumed.

no animals, but plenty of dust, it never goes, and i am not one to use a vacuum often, so it has to be a quick sweep if it looks a bit untidy, and if going downhill a proper vacuum - the Hoover i currently have is too unwieldy, pull along type, but the suction just isn't good enough
The little g tech is ok and certainly light. But incomparable to the RAM. I now have the little G tech, the Ram, and the new hand held one. If you get them because you almost automatically empty after one or two sessions, you start to feel the house has never been cleaner!

It's the filter system on the Ram which is so eye opening!
Awesome..... Where does it all come from I ask myself!
The reason you have a lot of dust is because you don't vacuum often enough , if you vacuum and use a cleaner with bag the dust is removed from the house and disposed of. Sweeping with a carpet sweeper just rearranges the dust , it settles somwhere else, carpet sweepers have no filter at all they are never going to remove dust, only really suitable for picking up stuff like small bits of paper.
Forget the sweeper and just use a good vacuum cleaner.

i am not physically able to. it takes all my effort to get out of bed
It was expensive but i have just bought the GTech Air Ram It looks like a carpet sweeper but actually is a vaccuum, rechargeable. very light, does carpets and hard floors and I am delighted with it. I have got two large dogs and my floors are always dirty, this will give a good clean round and leave me company ready. Qvc have them for 200 quid which may not be the cheapest place to buy but you get a 30 day free trial.
Have you considered getting a cleaner, I have two ladies that come in together for one hour once a fortnight, they clean the house from top to bottom (vacuuming, mopping, dusting, cleaning the bathrooms, changing the beds etc...they supply all the cleaning materials) they charge me £40 and I have to admit it is a godsend. My job is just to keep the place tidy, which you do if you know the cleaners are due. It is well worth thinking about.
Just get a Dyson....it does exactly what it says on the can !
Nilfisk Coupé Neo
I have to agree with UKSWF - if you can't clean yourself, get someone else to do it if you can afford it (that second if is a big one of course). I had to give up mowing the lawn as it put my back out every time and I was having to fork out £30-£40 to an osteopath to set me straight again. I figured I'd sooner pay the money to a gardener to do the work, and avoid the pain. (In fact, OH, who dislikes paying money to anyone for anything, took over the mowing, so that's a win-win.)
I thought it was going to be car, xstitcher lol.

Having read everything here,I'm now considering the Gtech air ram. I have an 18 month old,VERY heavy upright that I'm afraid to carry up the stairs...and its rubbish at getting pet hair up. I looked on both Amazon and Argos...the reviews are almost 100% positive.
My Dyson weighed an absolute ton and they're very expensive (apart from being useless, mine was anyway)
-- answer removed --
Prudie...I have never heard anybody say that Dysons are useless. Large, quite heavy and expensive yes but never useless. Are you saying that it didn't work and if you are, why didn't you take it back to the shop and get your money back ?

I used to have a VAX. I used it for 10 years. The first night I brought home my new Dyson, I used the Vax and then immediately used the Dyson. The amount of dirt that the Dyson got out of my carpets was amazing, which proved that the Vax couldn't have doing a very efficient job after all. All the other manufacturers refused to entertain Dyson when he first showed them the dual cyclone principle, but I notice that they all feature similar bag-less vacuum cleaners in their ranges. Not sure how they get past Dyson's copyrights and patents though !

employ a cleaner, sorry but i have to eat, i can't do both
Can I quote Quentin Crisp again ?

" There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse "

vacuums don't do table tops, not usually, they do however clear the carpets.
We have just bought my mum this one and it is brilliant very light weight and great suction. She is delighted with it.
