Lord Derby and Cross Hall

Did Lord Derby build an ornamental lake in the grounds of his hall at Cross Hall near Ormskirk? There is a large sunken area with man made edges and I have wondered about this recently, I used to play around it as a child and it has only recently made me think about what it might have been, being a Time Team devotee and all.
