I want to learn some form of programming just for something to do, what would be useful for Web design or a general understanding of coding etc?

No point in learning computer programming "just for something to do".

You need to think about what you are going to use it for once you have learned it.

If you have no end product in mind then you are wasting your time.

Note there are dozens and dozens of computing programming languages and technologies so you really do need to decide WHAT you are going to use the language for before settling on one.

If you want to do web design then start with HTML and CSS, they are the fundamentals of every web site in the world.

But web sites can get very complex and many other programming languages and technologies can also be used on web sites, like javascript, SQL databases and so on.

So first decide, WHAT do I want to do with any programming language I learn.
