try this

1.Shut down your Macbook
2.Plug it into the power socket
3.Hold down the left shift, option and control keys together with the power button for 10 seconds (your Macbook shouldn’t turn on)
4.Turn on your Macbook like normal.

Tamborine's SMC reset is only for portable Macs without a removable battery. If your Mac is a desktop or has a removable battery there are different methods to reset the System Management Controller

Oh, mine is a five year old I mac, running Mac 0SX.
I will try Ed's suggestion of the Piriform.
I have a laptop PC as well, but I much prefer to use the Mac. It seems to make allowances for my stupidity/lack of tech knowledge. :)
