New Samsung Galaxy Mobile.

Yesterday was my 70th Birthday and had a new mobile bought for me.
I have been using an antique old Nokia for a few yrs now and dont know where to start with it. may take it to carphone warehouse to sort out whats what.
I have £10 on it at mo, but will go on to sign up for a 2 yr subsription?
Have been told to take it to the carphone warehouse to get it all started.
What does that consist of? I havent got a clue really as i am used to an accasional top up. Thanks Abers x (complete novice lol)

I am surprised someone bought you a phone and now you are considering a contract. Often when you take out a phone contract they give you a free phone.
Do you know what phone it is (make/ model etc)?
Unless you use your phone a lot it may NOT be worth getting a contract as you have to pay out the monthly charge, even if you have not used your phone.
If you decide to get a contract then a contract usually lasts two years and depending on what you pay per month you get so many free minutes of calls, so many free texts, and so much data download from the internet.
They will give you a free phone, but depending how much you pay per month you either get a basic phone or a top of the range phone.
For example I only pay about £10.75 a month but dont get a lot of calls/texts/data free, but it is enough for me. I had to pay £90 extra to get a top of the range phone.
My daughter pays about £25 a month and she gets lots of free calls/texts/data, AND got a top of the range phone for free.
As you already have a phone IF you want to sign up for a contract then I would say a £10 or so a month contract will be enough for you. Don't let the shop talk you into paying more.
IF at a later date you find you are using more calls/texts/data download then you can always change your contract for a different one.

As you have said £10 contract sounds about right for me too as i dont use my phone often, its only for the odd text's, ab, f/book and now now I'll be able to send photos to f/book and stuff.
it will become clearer to me once I've looked onto it more without being talked into paying a hefty 2 yr contract.

how will you be accessing the internet - wifi or mobile internet. that's important when you choose your contract as you need to know how much data you are likely to need.
rather than a two year contract how about a rolling month contract ? i pay £15 a month to tesco and it has more call, texts than i need plus 2gb of data a month (thats a lot). if your not happy, its only 30 days to get out of it
you don;t really need to take it to carphone warehouse as they may try to get you onto a contract you don't need

One thing to consider if you are going to use the internet on your phone is how much information you can get on your screen.
Computer screens and mobile phones screens are divided up into small squares called pixels. Obviously the more pixels on your screen the more you can see.
For example my large computer screen at home is 1920x1080 pixels.
Now I am afraid the phone you have been bought is at the rather low end and the screen is only 320x240 pixels so it is not going to be able to display a lot of data when on the internet.
Just to compare, the Samsung Galaxy Fame is 480x320 pixels.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 mini I have is 800x480 pixels
The full Samsung Galaxy S3 is 1280x720 pixels.
The latest top of the range Samsung Galaxy S4 is 1920x1080 pixels, the same resolution as my 24" computer screen at home.
So if you are going to use the internet a lot you may want to consider getting a better phone for a better internet experience.

One of my relatives just got a deal from Argos for a free phone (Samsung Galaxy Fame) and 50 minutes of calls, unlimited texts, and 250Mb of data, all for £10.50 a month.
The Fame is not the greatest phone, but the screen is twice the resolution of yours. The Fame also has a lot more memory than the Galaxy Y (4Gb as against only about 300mb of memory in the Y)
Note also Samsung phones run software called Android (like computers run Windows) and the Samsung Galaxy Y that you have runs a rather old version of Android.

The most recent version of Android is 4.3

Actually I have just realised the is a Samsung Galaxy Y and a Samsung Galaxy Y (Young) and they are different phones.
You seemed to indicate you have the Galaxy Y Young.
They seemed to have improved things with the Samsung Galaxy Y Young and it now runs Android 4.1.2, has 4Gb of memory, and has a better screen - 480x320.
So if you have the Galaxy Y Young then it looks like it is similar to the Fame.
