I am stuck :(

I am on holiday and have no mobile signal - but can use broadband (I can't use the associated landline for calls)

I need to exchange occasional messages with a friend who is currently abroad and so has mobile signal but no internet (because of ludicrous roaming costs)

Skype could do for calls (but would be quite expensive for both of us, I would think), so I'd rather stick to messages (it's also the communication method that suits us best anyway).

Thanks for any ideas

Can't you both find a free wifi bar and email each other?

That would obviously work, in fact only my friend needs to find the free wifi.

But it sort of removes any spontaneity from the process, I'm hoping that some techie will have a more elegant idea.
Have you both got an Android phone? then can you both download Whatsapp? You'd have to know when both were on line of course to have real time texts.
We use Whatsapp and it's free for the first year and 69p a year after that. You can send photos too!
