I have just purchased a new Galaxy S3 phone that leaves me with my old HTC Desire G7 phone which has now been "Sim unlocked" so what I want to know is can you put any Sim card in it or does it have to be a special one for smart phones ? and if it has to be a special one what would be the cheapest PAYG Sim as I intend to pass this phone on to a young family member.

Thanks for the good advice about a factory reset fender62, I know that unlock means I can put anybodys sim in but as I said does it have to be a special smart phone sim or will an ordinary mobile phone sim work ?
You should be able to put any phone service SIM in an unlocked phone as long as it the same size / shape!

Presume you will want to initially try a Pay-As-You-Go Sim which you can top-up as needed.

You can usually obtain a 'Free' Sim from most of the mobile Phone companies, usually by requesting from their website.
