This is why you should look at all the options carefully during the install of any product.

Near the end of the "free" Malwarebytes install one of the options says something like "Install a trial of Malwarebytes Pro" (the chargalbe version).

This is ticked by default and if you dont untick it you get a trial of the paid for product.

Best if you uninstall this, download the free one again, then make sure you untick this option during the install.
Note that during the install of other products they have options to install further products, and these options are often ticked by default.

Among the products I have noticed installing other product are Adobe Flash, Java and so on.

These products will install things like the Chrome browser (and make it your default browser) or the Ask search bar.

So EVERY product you install you should check all the options carefully to make sure it is not installing another product.

I always select the "Custom" or "Advanced" install (if there is one) just to make sure it is not installing other software.

Hi VHG
Have done as you suggested (twice, once via CNET and once via filehippo) yet the installation still shows as a Trial version. On both of these sites there was no option to install a trial. Any advice would be appreciated, a link for the best download would be great.
Thanks again

Me again VHG
Just installed via Malwarebytes website which redirects you to CNET - still the same result, it shows it as a trial. Just thought I'd let you know.

Uninstall the program.

Run the installation program again. (If it's still on your computer, there's no need to download it again from anywhere).

Now the important bit!
When you get to a screen which say "Completing the Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware Setup Wizard" there are 3 boxes with ticks in them. CLICK TO REMOVE THE TOP TICK before proceeding.

Chris
Here is the screen you get at the end of the Malwarebytes install.

Note the top option says "Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO"

This is ticked ON as a default, you need to turn it off

Thanks again VHG and Chris.
I have never had this screen when installing Malwarebytes so maybe I'm installing from the wrong place.

Chris
Thanks for the link but no matter what I try, I still do not get the option you mention in the final page. Thanks for trying.
FBG40
I believe this extra option has only been added fairly recently so make sure you are not trying to install an old version.

Delete all install files you have previously downloaded from malwarebytes.

Then download the FREE version from this web page.

Now the install should (I hope) show up that option

Also make sure you do a full uninstall of Malwarebytes first.

AND reboot your computer before doing the new install of Malwarebytes.

Had a reply from Malware bytes, I will just go with what they say :

Tom Mercado, Jan 20 08:22 pm (PST):

Hello and welcome to the Malwarebytes consumer helpdesk. Thank you for choosing Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as your malware security solution, my name is Tom Mercado and I'll be assisting you today.

If you do not want the trial, refuse it when presented.

Once the Trial version has run(14 days), just select 'End Trial' and it will just disable the PRO features and you'll have a stand alone scanner(Free version). All downloads are the Free version with trial offer.

That's good, fbg, because I've had the same problem :-)

Buenchico, VHG, Zebuk and Ummmm,
Good news !! The 14 day trial on my installation of Malwarebytes just finished and I was presented with a screen (as per their reply to my Email) so just clicked on "End Trial" and all seems fine - I now have the free version. Again, thanks for all the help and interest shown.
