When i try to shut my PC down, it goes through the routine, gets as far as the screen which says

"Windows is Shutting Down"

but then it just freezes, the only way to get out of this is to literally pull the plug out !!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you recently installed a modem or some other hardware?

What is your operating system?

It is a XP system, and only 2 yrs old, my son was using but he informs me the only thing he put on it was a 'CD WRITER'.

This happens me too. I phone pc world and pcservicecall and they cant help me. Whatever you do, always go thru the process of shutting down, then when it freezes, hold in the power button to switch it off fully.

Also searcg for spyware and anti-virus and also check for errors on ur hard drive. If u need any advice on these, repost.

Cheers, but holding in the power button does not turn it off, i have run a 'virus check' and 'scandisk' but none of these help either. Beginning to think i might have to FORMAT and start again !!!  or is that not a good option ?
I once had a usb mouse that stopped windows closing or even restarting. So you could try just taking all usb devices out and seeing if it shuts down.
