I was in a queue at the local Council Rent Office waiting to plead my late mentally disabled sister-in-law's case to stop her being evicted from her home.
There was a tv in the waiting area - nobody really knew was was actually happening, as the reports were coming in thick and fast. It wasn't until I was driving home that I heard the full horrible story on the car radio, and then it sunk in what had happened.

I was working at home (as I did every day back then), listening to Radio 4. They announced it and I immediately went and put the TV on - at that point the second plane hadn't hit and there was still speculation as to the cause. I sat glued to the TV for the rest of the afternoon.
I wasn't alive for JFK and my first memory of a "where were you" incident is when Space Shuttle Columbia exploded. I was sitting at my desk at university, writing a letter and listening to Steve Wright.
The next one was Princess Diana, then 9/11. I wonder what the next one will be ...

I was in Rome with my boyfriend at the time. It was shown on a tv in a cafe. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. We had friends there who were celebrating their 1st wedding anniversary. They were due to go to the restaurant at the top of the towers that day but decided to go the day before (thankfully)as it was a lovely day and they were worried that the 11th wasnt going to be as nice a morning. It always makes me think of what could have been. They have pictures taken from their hotel room which overlooked the towers and it is so surreal.
