Just how long is the average time needed for a page to load. I seem to spend half my time clicking the "refresh" button. Is my processor in need of an overhall or do I have to accept that if my home is a certain distance from the local exchange I will always have this problem.

Well, every time you click the refresh button, the browser discards anything it's already downloaded and starts again. So you're not helping!

Why is there an option to "refresh" if it is not helping the matter?--
The option to refresh is to display changes on the page that may have arisen after you downloaded it.

Many thanks rojash.--what about the latter part of my question; can the distance from the tel. ex. make a difference to speed?
All sorts of things make a difference to the speed - distance to the exchange, contention ratio, quality of line, etc. You can get a reasonable approximation of the performance of you connection by speed test on two or three separate sites and averaging the result.
