Can someone please explain the difference between Internet Explorer, which is an integral part of my system, and Google which always appears when I go on line. Are they not both search engines? Why do I have to have both?

I am no IT person, but you need IE or a similar browser to access the internet (or so I believe!) but Google is a search engine.

(I'll retire and wait to be corrected...) I've got both.
Don't know why anybody uses IE,Firefox and Google Chrome are much faster.(IMO)
Internet Explorer is a web browser (and it's not an integral part of your system).
There are a number of browsers you can use: Firefox, Chrome, EI, Opera, Safari, to name but a few.

Google is a Search Engine. You don't have to use it. Alternatives are Yahoo!, Bing, and Ask, among others.

If Google appears whenever you go online, that's because you have it set as your home page. You can set any website to be your home page, or (as I do) have your browser open to a blank page.
Everhelpful - we like IE, no point in changing if we are happy with it.
IE is a web browser, which presents the information found by Google, a search engine.
You don't have to use Google, there are others.
Google good, IE bad
why bad? - it doesn't give me any problems.
boxtops,I did say "In my opinion".Anyone can use whatever suits them.
:-)
I like IE as welly boxy :-)

Genes Reunited (which I use a lot) recently upgraded their system and it was impossible to use using IE................after hundreds of complaints they've reverted to the old database so IE must be quite popular.
^ lol at welly .......hahaha

Interesting answers thank you. So IE is a web browser and Google is a search engine. A web browser presents the information found by a search engine - seems like two tools to do one job.
That's a little like saying a television and a television program are to tools to one job. Without one the other is no use at all.
two tools even!
Hate I.E especially on Facebook games-only work properley (send and ask for things) on Google
Firefox gives me all sorts of problems, so I deleted it completly, and now my desktop PC works like new, except when I do something wrong.
Forgot to mention, I use IE..

After all these comments is Firefox a browser or a search engine? I've tried Firefox twice and uninstalled it. Far too many plug-ins and add-ons.
"is Firefox a browser or a search engine? "
Try reading answer number three.

"Far too many plug-ins and add-ons."
It will have as many as you decide to install - no more, no less.
