ipods are only made by apple !

go 4 the 20 gig version and i believe you get the docking station thrown in.

My son bought me an ipod shuffle for my birthday and its brilliant! it holds approx 120 songs and u can either play them in order or a random shuffe. its really easy to use and all the software comes with it. all u need is a pc which connects to the internet. hope this helps. i didn't have a clue what an ipod was until i got mine!!!
As said above, ipods are only a brand name - what you want to buy is called, generically, an mp3 player similar to a personal stereo (walkman) but the songs come in a digital format rather than on a tape or cd.  There are a wide range of mp3 available, depending if you want reliability or fashion
The iPod range comes in many models, sizes, colours and price...

The chapest is the iPod shuffule and the expensive one being the iPod Photo which can also store pictures as well as being a music player.

So it will come down to how much money you are willing to spend.

I suggest you take a look at them at http://tinyurl.com/brnyz

All of the iPods have a Hard disk drive and a screen, so you'll have bags of space and you'll see what song is playing etc, you can also store contact numbers and Apple even includes a few games. However there is an exception to this, the iPod Photo has a colour screen and the iPod suffle does not have a hard disk drive, it uses solid state memory and it does not have a screen.

Don't worry about having a Laptop, you'll be OK. As long as you have a USB port you'll be fine.

So decide how much you want to spend as it can be expensive.

There's a new Sony one out later this month that looks like it might be worth serious consideration. It's the NW-HD5, holds about 13,000 songs and the battery lasts for around 40 hours. Have a look at http://www.sony.co.uk/ShowArticle.do?article=11095868892 83
The only thing about Sonys is that they refuse to forget about their ATRAC format and just go with MP3's like nearly everyone else. This one will play MP3's but you'll have to go through their fairly poor Sonic Stage software to upload the songs.
I'm still going to buy one though!

You are paying a lot for a name! also There is an issue with MP3 players and DRM (Digital Rights Management) I have seen players that will only play songs that have been ripped by the software that comes with the player - big problem if you already have a collection of MP3s. I myself have an Archos Jukebox - Plays MP3 files and appears as an additional harddisk when I connect it to my computer. So I can just drag a drop MP3 files to it. So its only a 10Gb disk but it takes industry standard 2.5" laptop hard drives so I can always upgrade if i wish or when the hard drive eventually fails. Can you do that with an Ipod? and the best bit Dixon do em for about 120

i've just bough a pink ipod mini and its fab mine was 140 but it' worth it i pods are around 200 i think and are colour screens but if you just want 2 listen 2 music i recomend an i pod mini
