I'll go along with using Firefox with an add-on, but my preference would be for this one:
https://addons.mozill...be-video-downl-10137/
It allows you to save Youtube videos with just a couple of clicks, in your chosen format (such as MP4) so that you don't need to convert from FLV format.

However I'll go along with using VLC (or GOM), in preference...

If you use Firefox browser .. you need the addon downloadhelper .. http://www.downloadhelper.net/

This will capture and save the .flv file to your HDD. It's possible to convert too .. to a 'useable' format, when you download .. check the site for that.
If you don't convert, you will need the codecs installing preferably .. so WMP or another DirectShow player like it can play the file (namely flv splitter and ffdshow) Get these from links at
http://www.inmatrix.c...yer/formats/flv.shtml

.. Or ... install VLC Player or Classic Media Player .. they will play flv and any other format.

However I'll go along with using VLC (or GOM), in preference to Windows Media Player, anyway; they're far better at playing videos.

PS: Before someone else points it out, I'll add that saving Youtube videos isn't exactly legal!
If you copy and paste the youtube link into a site called keepvid.com you can save the video into several formats of your choice, inlcuding flv and mp3.
If you want to save (download) the audio from a Youtube video, then go here:

Thanks for that link Buenchico and I am a convert to VLC .
The legal aspect surely only applies to showing the 'downloaded material' in public?
Many thanks
