has anyone got any idea how i can stop the msn homepage coming up when messenger signs in?

I think you are referring to the MSN Today popup. On the MSN Messenger contact list menu bar, click on Tools, Options, then select "General" on the left. Untick the box next to "Display MSN Today when Messenger signs in".
