Sound problem on HDMI link

I sometimes link my laptop to my television with an HDMI lead to watch television o iPlayer.

However, although I always get a picture, sometimes I get sound through the television and sometimes I don't. I'm not aware of doing anything differently on the different occasions so don't know whether it's me or a fault in my equipment and if the latter where and what to check.

The laptop is a HP Pavillion dm3 (Windows 7) and the television is a Samsung (not sure of model number).

I don't have a separate TV to try and link the laptop to nor a separate HDMI device to link to the TV.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like it's sometimes auto selecting the correct playback device and sometimes not (normally it would select the correct one if the laptop is connected to HDMI and then switched on, but it might not auto select the correct one if connected while the laptop is on)
