Is there not 'Digital audio' setting on the TV against that input?
Right click on the speaker icon down by the clock (on the computer), Select playback devices, click once on HDMI audio out (or something similar) to highlight it, then click on the "Set Default" button under the list of playback devices.

You may need to set it back to the speakers (or whatever it's currently on) after you disconnect the HDMI cable.

I don't have an option for hdmi all I have is independent (rtc) headphones idt high definition audio or speakers/headphones idt high definition audio.
It might be of help if you mentioned the exact model of laptop now.

Not all computers have/had the ability to output audio via HDMI, specifically some of the earlier nvidia graphics equipped ones.

My laptop is a dell studio 1737 just over two years old.
The first thing I'd suggest is making sure you have the latest video drivers installed, you may have either an AMD video chip or an intel chip in that so check and select the correct driver

I agree .. digital audio may not be supported thru hdmi ..
either as a result of a driver .. or pproblems concerning HDCP.
