Does anyone use their iPad for reading audiobooks aloud? If so can you tell me if the books are read by human readers, or is it the VoiceOver facility that reads them to you. If it is the VoiceOver, is the reading sympathetic to the text or is it somewhat robotic? Many thanks.

Surely an audio book is an mp3 file, or similar, not a text file.
You download the voice, not the text, so it will be the reader's voice you hear and not a bot reading text.
hc is right, it would normally be an MP3 within the ipod / music part of the ipad. Just like you would have on an ipod.
