Sorry to be a thickie, but can someone explain in layman's terms the advantages of 3G over plain old Wi Fi please !!

WI-fi requires you to be in range of a wireless access point that you have permission to use.

3G uses the mobile phone network so will work anywhere you have a suitable phone signal.
